The playmaker from Winter Park, Florida was about to choose to play for the Florida Gators, but changed his mind and went towards Duke.
Rivers first broke the news to Kansas Jayhawks’ coach Bill Self and North Carolina Tar Heels’ coach Roy Williams, as both of those schools were two of Rivers’ top three choices. On Thursday morning, Rivers canceled all campus-meetings as he was about to go North Carolina to visit soon.
“He picked Duke because of [Mike Krzyzewski] and his staff,” Winter Park coach David Bailey said. “There is a ton of tradition at Duke, and it was the best place for him from a basketball and academic standpoint.”
According to Rivers’ father, who is Boston Celtics’ head coach Doc Rivers, the decision hasn’t been made fully. It’s not finalized, yet.
“He’s leaning [toward Duke] and most likely he’ll commit in the next couple days,” Rivers said. “But it’s not official, yet. I’ll wait and let him do it.”
Rivers will definitely help out Duke, as the 6’4″, 189-pounder will fit well in the team’s fast-breaking style of play. Rivers is the type of playmaker the Blue Devils need, who are just coming off a win over the Butler Bulldogs in the NCAA National Championship.
Duke is also having Seth Curry coming in this year to play, too.
Duke looks like they are ready to go.
