College Basketball: The Big 12 Draws The Line

Every since the Big 10 started talking about expansion the Big 12 has been in trouble. Big 10 was not the only one, the Pac-10 could also play a major part in this dilemma. 

The Big 12 is on the verge of losing its identity as a powerhouse conference.

Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado could all possibly leave the Big 12 for the Pac-10. Missouri and Nebraska are two who could leave for the Big-10. That would leave powerhouse KU, and Kansas State as the only two strong members left in the Big 12.

Dan Beebe has spoken with Mizzou and Nebraska hoping that they will stay and value their commitment. Instead of waiting for a response he set a deadline for both schools to decide whether they'll stay or go. Nebraska has until 5:00 PM, while Mizzou has abides by the same guidelines.

If all eight of these teams would leave the Big 12 would look like this: Iowa State, Baylor, Kansas, and Kansas State. Not that appealing if you ask me. The Big 12 is in serious trouble but in a way I think that Mizzou and Nebraska will have to stay in the conference.

The Big-10 may not send an invitation to either Mizzou or Nebraska; so if they do not make a commitment to the Big 12 now they could be the lone ones out.

All doesn’t look so bad for the Big 12; “We received very, very encouraging reports that we have a very bright future,” Beebe said in reference of discussions with potential television partners. “We can be in a long-term arrangement very soon that could put us at the same level as any conference in the country. We’re encouraged by those developments. Based on the conversations we’ve had I think we’re in a very good position.”
