More 2011 Prospects Come off the Board this Past Weekend

Texas Tech head coach Pat Knight picked up a verbal commitment over the weekend from Humble, Texas native Hershey Robinson. Robinson, a 6-foot-7 power forward is from just outside of Houston and becomes the second to verbally join Knight's class of 2011.

5-foot-9 Andre Smith has committed to Winthrop. The Florida point guard is known for his smarts on the court and play making decisions and should be a great addition in the back court for Winthrop. He is considered the 102nd best point guard prospect in the nation, according to ESPNU.

Fred Landers will be heading to North Florida. The 6-foot-6 Landers joins previously committed Jacoby Davis Jr. at North Florida, giving the Ospreys and head coach Matthew Driscoll quite a solid stepping stone for UNF in 2011.

6-foot-8 big man Kameron Dunnican has given his verbal announcement to attend Georgia Southern. Dunnican, rated as the 25th best center in the class of 2011, according to scout.com, is a native of South Carolina and chose the Eagles over Appalachian State.

5-foot-11 point guard Jevonte Thomas has decided to continue his playing career at the University of Houston. A native of Irving, Texas, Thomas will move a little further south in the state and join the likes of Jherrod Stiggers for the Cougars class of 2011.

Temple has picked up the commitment of point guard Will Cummings, one of the more highly regarded guards in the class of 2011. Rated as the 93rd best point guard in the class, Cummings should be an instant bonus in the back court for Fran Dunphy with his great speed and quickness.

Fabyon Harris Will Attend Howard In Springs, Texas

5-foot-9 guard Fabyon Harris was the granted his release from the University of Houston earlier this week. It was reported that he left for family and personal reasons.

His High School coach said that Fabyon may be homesick. The hardships he has faced when he loss key family member, has not been overcome.

Either way, the 5-foot-9 guard, told me today (August 18, 2010) where he was headed via facebook.

He was assumed to be headed back to his hometown to play for the DePaul Blue Demons.

However, he threw everyone a curve ball "I'm going in Big Springs, Texas," Harris said. "It's a good school for, it is just a good fit."

The Howard College Hawks won the National Championship last year on the Junior College circuit. They have produced NCAA Division-1 athletes and could do the same with their talented class this year.

Joseph Young Denied Appeal

Heading into next season, the Providence Friars was poised to be the next Butler or George Mason of College Basketball. There 2010 class would solidify them as players in a tough Big East conference. They presented on a top five recruiting class that featured two shooting guards that could score in bunches.

Gerald Coleman the 6-foot-4 shooting guard was expected to jump right in and crack the starting lineup. As for Joseph Young, that could have been his backcourt mate.

Young has one of the most reliable three-point jumpers that could have been on display at Providence. He excels without the ball making cuts, and running off-screens to free himself up for jump shots.

That is the player the Friars were getting with Young. However, they will not see him on the court one game as a true freshman.

The 6-foot-2 shooting guard wants to be released from his letter of intent from Providence to stay close to his ill family member. According to reports today, Young was denied the appeal.

Nonetheless, his father did state that his son would not be attending the University of Providence.

By NCAA rules, Young will have to sit out this upcoming year of College Basketball. He will lose a year of eligibility but could also transfer close to Houston, Texas. His father is currently the director of basketball operations at the University of Houston.

A scholarship was just freed-up by released guard Fabyon Harris, and Young to Houston does make sense.

Collegiate Hoops Goes One-On-One With Freshman Fabyon Harris

Fabyon Harris is a superstar type player. During his season season at Hyde Park he averaged 26 points, six assist, five rebounds and four steals.

Those are definitely not statistics that any regular player achieves.

Harris is a special talent that will make a big splash once he steps foot on the Houston campus. 

Harris is smaller than most point guards at 5'8'' but that doesn't stop him from dominating the game. He is blazing fast with the ability to score strong around the rim. 

With that speed he likes to run in transition. That where his game thrives and should be a very good player because of that.  

Harris took the time to sit down with me and talk briefly about his future as a basketball player.

How are you today?

Fabyon Harris: Good

How is the off-season going for you?

Fabyon Harris: It is good

Has anything changed now that you’re on the verge of playing college basketball?

Fabyon Harris: Yes, a lot. Now I have to go to Houston and go hard.

What is your main goal this off-season?

Fabyon Harris: To get right to college and work on my game.

Who would you compare your game to?

Fabyon Harris: J. Rome (Jerome Randle) from Cal

What would you say you needed to improve, and how would you improve it?

Fabyon Harris: My pull up. I will get in the gym every day to improve it.

What is your best strength?

Fabyon Harris: My defense, and three-point shot.

Out of all the school that recruited you, what made you choose the Cougars?

Fabyon Harris: I love all the coaches, and the team is in the right place for me to do what I have to do.

What kind of role do you think you’ll play in the Cougars offense?

Fabyon Harris: Playmaker or whatever coach wants me to do, I will do it.

What do you think will be the toughest challenge playing for the Cougars?

Fabyon Harris: Nothing

What kind of goals have you set for your freshman season in college?

Fabyon Harris: To get good grades, and do well on the basketball court.

What can fans expect out of the Cougars next season?

Fabyon Harris: We are going to put on a show and make a run for them.
