Jimmer Fredette Can Walk Away With His Head High

There was a point where many believed that the BYU Cougars were going to make it to the Final Four with such a solid roster that featured the National Player of the Year, Jimmer Fredette.

Fredette scored 30-or-more points in 16 games this season. He also had a 52-point outing, and three 40-plus games.

Fredette has taken advantage of every opportunity placed before him.

He isn't a John Wall, but his game on the court has turned his name into a similar media outrage.

He has his on dance, his name is considered a noun, which has its on definition as well.

Outside of all the off-court things, Fredette has become a hot commodity due to his ability to drain NBA three's, and beat the opposition off the dribble.

NBA superstar Kevin Durant tweeted that Fredette is the best scorer in the world. His teammate Russell Westbrook also said, "I know just from watching him that he's going to be a great NBA player."

Fredette doesn't have a ton of post-season history, with his first Sweet 16 berth in his four year career coming this year, but he can leave the college game with his head held high.

He is among the elite players to score 1,000 points in a single season, along with shattering Danny Ainge's Mountain West Conference scoring record with 2,599 points over his career at BYU; that's an average of 18.6 points per game.

He was also present in the NCAA tournament, all four years at BYU along with ending his career with a 114-27 overall record.

Rightfully so, Fredette won the most prestigious award in College Basketball. Every player that has won Naismith National Player of the Year award, has went on to have, at the least, some success in the NBA.

Fredette owns six Mountain West Conference all-time records, along with many BYU records. Freddette was a fierce competitor, he took College Basketball by storm and everyone still wants to learn "How to Jimmer."

BYU Cougars Not Ready to Fade to Black

The BYU Cougars (27-3, 13-2) were playing hot after sweeping the season series of their conference foe the San Diego State Aztecs (28-2, 13-2)

Jimmer Fredette captured the eyes of many with his scoring ability, but sophomore Brandon Davies is what steered BYU to elite status.

Davies 6'9'' 240 pound frame was a problem for many teams that competed against BYU. Davies is athletic, long and can run the court well.

He was one of Fredette's favorite targets starting 26 of 29 games and turned in 11.1 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds.

After meeting with school officials on Monday to confess an honor code violation, Davies was released from the team and could be possibly booted from the school.

BYU's dream season has took an unexpected turn for the worst. Without Davies, it's hard to picture BYU a final four team or a No. 1 seed in the tournament.

"We told him it's OK," Fredette said. "Sometimes in life we make mistakes. We've got to play through it."

After spending one day at No. 3 in the polls, the Cougars suffered a 82-64 loss at home to the New Mexico Lobos (19-11, 7-8) who finished a season sweep of BYU. Without Davies, the spotlight has shifted to Mountain West conference rival San Diego State.

Although, BYU wants everybody to know that it hasn't gone anywhere.

Head coach Dave Rose did give New Mexico a ton of credit for taking it to the Cougars. Coach Rose also said, "we'll regroup," following the blowout loss to New Mexico.

At 13-2 in the Mountain West, a win at home against Wyoming would give the Cougars a share of the conference title. It might also be a chance to show that BYU can win without Davies.

For once this season, the Cougars are considered the underdogs in College Basketball. Their leader Fredette has always had BYU strong and willing to battle against top competition.

Fredette was able to will this team last season before hitting a road block in the NCAA tournament. With more in his arsenal this season, their shouldn't be much holding the senior back.

Jimmer Fredette Has Become a Can't Miss Player

Jimmer Fredette’s name has to be a hot topic in the player of the year conversation after his display of his scoring ability all season. Not to mention, Fredette has the BYU Cougars (20-1, 5-0) ranked inside the top 10 and looking for their first conference title in years.

Coming into this season, Yahoo Rivals listed Fredette as the most explosive player in the country. Many also regarded Fredette as a lethal scorer, but nobody really expected him to put up 40-points multiple times in one season—let alone, twice in a row.

Fredette had surpassed former scoring leader Kemba Walker after his 47-point performance against Utah. Since then, Fredette has owned the top spot in the scoring column and is now up to 27.4 per game.

Fredette has also pushed his average up to 35.7 points during conference play

Fredette has scored 20-plus points in 17 games this season, including seven 30-plus games, and three 40-point outings.

After his most recent 43-point game against rival San Diego State, Fredette received props from many formidable players, including NBA stars.

“Jimmer Fredette is the best scorer in the world,” said Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant via Twitter. “Jimmer Fredette is cold, #respect” said Washington Wizards star John Wall.

Fredette isn’t the same player that got locked down in the ’09 NCAA tournament by Jacob Pullen. He finally gets it, and has grown from last year’s disappointment, which is one of the reasons BYU is one of the top teams in the nations.

“Jimmer has a relentless mindset toward scoring the ball, which you might think everyone has, but his is unique,” said coach Rose.

The past few gams, coach Dave Rose has stuck with the same offense that plays to Fredette’s strengths.

“He’s also playing with guys that want to get the best shot possible on every possession,” said Rose. “I think you can see that when Jimmer’s got a hot hand and is rolling pretty good that his teammates really look for him.”

The last two games combined, Fredette has been hot from deep nailing 9-of-17 (52%) of his three point baskets.

Fredette will continue to grow as the Cougars travel to take on the New Mexico Lobos (14-7, 2-4) who are underachieving, but still a formidable opponent for BYU.

If Fredette were to recreate another 40-point night against the Lobos, he would solidify everyone’s notion of being the most dominant scorer in the college game.

BYU Cougars Lurking In The Shadows

Despite owning a (10-0) record, for the second time in three years, against a formidable schedule, the No. 18 ranked BYU Cougars are having a tough time convincing the nation that it belongs in the National Championship discussion.

The Cougars have wins over Saint Mary's, South Florida, and a blowout of Arizona.

BYU has also struggled at Utah State, and could have easily lost to Saint Mary's if Jimmer Fredette's three-point attempt didn't find the basket with 10 seconds left in the game.

The Cougars embrace one of the most explosive guards in the country. Fredette averages 23.7 points, 4.1 assist, and 3.2 rebounds in 32.4 minutes of action.

Jackson Emery has become a great threat alongside Fredette. He is the second-leading scorer with 11.4 points, while chipping in 3.8 rebounds, and 2.9 steals per game.

The Cougars sucess has steamed from more than just good guard play. BYU is one of the most efficient teams in college basketball. The Cougars have turned the ball over an average of 10.1 times over their first ten games, which is the least for any team throughout the first ten outings.

The Cougars are also very active on the defense end coming away with 9.6 steals per game.

BYU is one of the most balanced teams in the nation. Despite Fredette's cushion in the scoring column, the Cougars are very balanced on the glass. Every player crashes the glass, pulling down 41.7 rebounds per game, which ranks 18th in the nation.

The Cougars seem to be one of the more clutch teams in the nation. BYU plays well with their back against the wall. But, the Cougars could certainly benefit from more marquee wins down the stretch, beginning Saturday against UCLA, a very physical ball club with a great on-ball defender in Tyler Honeycutt.

BYU's tune-up games are in the rear view mirror now as conference season slowly approaches. The Mountain West conference is going to be tough to win. There are three ranked teams in the Mountain West conference including No. 10 San Diego State.

If the Cougars are able to come away with the conference title, it should be in the talks.

College Hoops High Stakes: What Players Face The Highest Expectations?

Teams that are going in the wrong direction always seem to find themselves a freshman that is looked to turnaround the program. Sometimes the freshman answers their prayers. However, there are times where the stakes are too high for the 18-year old.

But in some cases, a superstar leaves and a reserve has to fill the shoes.

To nobody's surprise, there will be a lot of players that will have high expectations. Whether or not if they reach expectations, is up to speculation.

Here are some players that has high expectations headed into the 2010-11' season. 

G William Buford, Ohio State

Last season, Ohio State was ruled by Evan Turner. He did just about everything to keep the Buckeyes' competitive. Now that he is gone, future Junior Buford has to step up big time. He is expected to lead this Buckeye' team to the winner's circle every night. Adding Jared Sullinger, help his cause, but a lot of people are going to be expecting big things from Buford.

G Jimmer Fredette, BYU

Fredette is returning for his senior season of college basketball. He is going into next year as one of the better players in college hoops. However, after a poor outing against Kansas State in the NCAA tournament, people are starting to expect more from Fredette. Yahoo Rivals is expecting an 'explosive' season, and Dick Vitale posted "Love Pullen but I feel Fredette will have a big year."

G Jacob Pullen, Kansas State

Pullen was a part of the Kansas State backcourt that led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight last season. However, his running-mate Denis Clemente has graduated. He doesn't stand alone in the backcourt, but a lot of hoop fans are expecting a lot from the bearded player in the little apple. 

G Kemba Walker, UConn

The Huskies' lost four major contributors last season to graduation. However, they reserved their great playmaking guard Walker. Not to mention, they brought in a great deal of young players that are going to need guidance. Walker will be looked to lead this group of young players while restoring the program to grace.

F Elias Harris, Gonzaga

Last season, Harris played beside Matt Bouldin at Gonzaga. Now that Bouldin is gone, Harris has to step up and be the leader for the 'Zags. He is a 6-foot-7 wing threat and showed flashes of being a leader last season with Bouldin. This upcoming season will be based on Harris. We are all expecting Harris to step up big time!

F C.J Leslie, North Carolina State

Leslie came into NC State as the most hyped recruit since Julius Hodge. We all know how much he was able to bring to the Wolfpack. Leslie is going to be looked on to do the same. He is coming into a team with talented players but he is going to be looked to step up and be the leader. With the case of Leslie, he is stuck with high expectations from Wolfpack fans.

F Markieff Morris, Kansas

His twin brother Marcus has proven he can bang in the post. However, Markieff hasn't gotten the chance Marcus has. Now with Cole Aldrich in the NBA, Jayhawk fans are looking for Markieff to step up big time. He hasn't played significant minutes in the past, just the role of reliever. This season, Markieff is going to have to help the frontcourt big time!

C Jon Kreft, Florida State

Kreft is a 7-foot monster. He is looking to fill the shoes of former-Seminole Soloman Alabi. Now with Alabi, he was the sure intimidator and rebounder. Kreft will have to live up to all his expectations and keep the defensive presence alive. Fans are going to see the tough defense they seen last year without Alabi, from Kreft.

On July 4, 2010 BYU’s Jimmer Fredette was named as one of the most explosive college basketball player—according to Yahoo Sports!—for obvious reasons.


During last season, Jimmer Fredette dropped 49 points, nine assist, and seven rebounds.


He also dropped point on TCU, and 37 on the Florida Gators in OT.


However, once the BYU Cougars reached the Kansas State Wildcats, their superstar Fredette went downhill.
